At the Athens Farmers Market, we grow community and community begins with our children. In fostering this idea, the AFM has become a “Saturday morning staple” for many families and a welcoming surprise to others. Each Saturday, beginning at 9, we have a free, fun, and family-friendly activity at out Children’s Booth.
Over the 2019 season, Abigail Darwin, the community coordinator, along with partnering organizations have presented activities such as: performing plays in a box theater; holding hissing cockroaches from the UGA Entomology Department; creating veggie monsters; okra stamping Mother’s Day cards; and conducting their own miniature farmers markets made for smaller hands.
Additionally, we host annual special events including Easter egg hunts, strawberry pie eating contest, dad jokes on Father’s Day, ugly tomato contest and squash car races!
Our hope is that children and families look forward to their engagements with the market in such delight that the upcoming generation fosters a love and investment in both their community and local food environment. Come join us throughout this season to create, play, and laugh!
