Hey market shoppers!

Landon Bubb here. This year I'm excited to take on a new endeavor at the market as the Market Chef! I’ve already taken on various roles at the market in the past. I’ve been a shopper at the market for 7 years. I was an intern under Jan Kozak for three. I’ve worked for my friends selling soap, veggies, and preserves. It was as an intern at the front token booth that I fell in love with the Athens Farmers Market, its shoppers, its producers, and its crucial role in the community. Being able to swipe people's SNAP/EBT cards and give them twice the tokens gave me a tangible indicator of the power of our market. In this position, I’ll be overseeing the cooking demo portion of the market, making weekly meal plans, and posting on this blog about all things local food.

After interning at the market, I've gone on to perfect the art of juggling various hats. I work full time as a barista at Buvez where we source a lot of local ingredients. I'm also on the board of director for the Athens Area Arts Council and Daily Co-Op. Last year I also took on the role of Executive Director of the nonprofit Promoting Local Agriculture and Cultural Experiences (PLACE). I'm excited to add Market Chef as a new hat and expand its scope.

At the market, there will be a greater presence of cooking demos. These will be hosted by a rotating chef including myself, Chef Houston of the Foundry, representatives from UGA SNAP Ed, and other local chefs! We’ll be breaking down cooking techniques to help you make tasty, seasonal dishes using ingredients you can find at the market. We’ll provide recipe cards and answer any questions so you can recreate the meal for family and friends!

To supplement the cooking demos, I’ll be creating weekly meal plans so you, like me, can have some semblance of control over your week. Dishes will be veggie centric and can range from side dish to entree. I’ve been vegetarian for 9 years and vegan for 3 so I’m not especially equipped to recommend meat pairings but I’ll try if the dish warrants it. All of these meal plans will live on the Athens Farmers Market Blog and will be printed off at the market.

I look forward to connecting with y'all at the market this weekend. Any time this season, please let me know if you have a veggie forward recipe you'd love for me to feature. Or we can share stories, best practices, tips, and stories from the long Winter. I hope you're as excited as me for another great year at the Athens Farmers Market!
